Inter-county Boys U19
The U19 ‘s travelled to Northants for Stage 2 of the Inter-County tournament. Already losing Laurence Temple to work commitments we were further depleted when no 1 player Jeremy Harris had to pull out due to injury. We therefore travelled with only 4 players.
First up was against Hertfordshire. Josh Jenkins went on first and playing his first county U19 match put in a good performance before finally going down 3-1. Sam, Greg and Joe competed well in their matches but unfortunately all lost 3-0. Herts 5 Cambs 0
Next up the home team Northants. They had strength in depth and made it tough for Sam at 3 and Josh at 4. Greg competed well with their no 2 before losing 3-1 and Joe at the top of the order had the hardest job of all against his opponent who was ranked no 9 at U19 nationally. Northants 5 Cambs 0
Our last match was against Leicestershire and ended up being a play off for 3/4 as they also had lost to both of the other counties. Having conceded the 5th string we needed a big performance from the lads. Josh went on first and put in another good performance losing 3 tight games to his opponent. Next up was Sam who won his first game before losing a very tight second and eventually going down 3-1. Joe then went on against the Leics no 1, won the first before losing the second and then regaining his grip on the match to win 3-1. Finally, Greg went on at no 2 and having seen Joe win was determined to try to do likewise, There were some tight games but Greg managed to run out a 3-0 winner. Leics 3 Cambs 2
Many thanks and congratulations to the team. Sam and Josh are not familiar with playing County squash and both proved they can compete at this level. Greg and especially Joe playing higher up the order than normal both won one match and battled well in the others.
